Dynamics of Business Model Innovation in Materials Production and Processing Enterprises
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the dynamics of changes in Business Model Innovation (BMI) in the context of factors driving these changes, selected based on a literature review. The following factors, which act as driving forces for change, were selected for the study: the level of digital innovations uptake, initiatives promoting sustainable development, and competitiveness. Design/Methodology/Approach: The research method used was a diagnostic survey and the research technique was computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI). The research was carried out on a sample of n=100 manufacturing companies in Poland. Findings: The study presents the level of digital innovation uptake in enterprises and the sustainability initiatives undertaken by these enterprises. It demonstrates the existence of statistically significant correlations between the level of digital innovation adoption, sustainability and competitiveness. Practical Implications: The research may serve as a reference for the manufacturing sector regarding the adoption of digital innovations and sustainable development initiatives, and their impact on competitiveness. The research findings presented may also be used to streamline industrial policy supporting the BMI. Originality/Value: The research presented here is based on an original, proprietary approach to the study of BMI. Primary data from the business sector was used. The value of this research lies in demonstrating the relationships between complex variables – the level of digital innovation uptake, sustainability and competitiveness – as well as the role these variables play as driving forces behind changes in the BMI.
