The Role of Intermodal Transport in the Decarbonizationof Seaports

Abstract:

Purpose: The purpose of the article is to analyze the role of intermodal transport as a tool to support the decarbonization process of seaports, with a particular focus on the synergies between rail and inland waterway transport. Design/Methodology/Approach: The article is based on an interdisciplinary approach, combining a literature review and case studies of selected seaports and inland ports, such as the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, the Port of Rotterdam, the Port of Amsterdam and the Port of Duisburg. Findings: the results of the study indicate that intermodal transport significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by optimizing logistics flows and reducing reliance on carbon-intensive road transport modes. Investment in the development of intermodal infrastructure, such as rail terminals and digital management platforms that support port decarbonization, is crucial. Practical implications: The study's findings underscore the importance of collaboration between seaports as well as inland ports as a model for integrating intermodal transportation. Examples of such partnerships show that the development of joint projects supports decarbonization and improves the efficiency of supply chains at the international level. Originality: The article fills a research gap by analyzing in detail the impact of intermodal transportation on seaport decarbonization processes.
